Louis W. Ballard born in NE Oklahoma, is “known as the father of Native American composition.” After graduating from the University of Tulsa with a degree in music theory and music education, he returned to the University of Tulsa to earn a master’s degree and was distinguished by being the first Native American to receive a graduate degree in music composition. He went on to compose a large number of musical works for a variety of different instruments and ensembles.
